PLAY IN A DAY DRAMA WORKSHOPS: KS3
ACT ON INFO turn up, start work with a class at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day the class perform a 15 minute play in front of an audience. Play in a Day drama workshops can be used to introduce or conclude topic work, to promote inclusion and for revision. The play performed at the end of the day is a 15 minute ensemble piece using inventive theatre techniques such as choral speech, stylised movement and mime.
We encourage that you invite an audience, perhaps the rest of the year group to watch the play at the end of the day.
Play in a Day has many benefits:
Teaches about topics, history or issues.
The class learn a lot in one day about the specific topic or issue the play is about, but as this is done in a creative way they feel an emotional connection to the material and remember it better.
Provides stimulus for further study
Play in a Day can encourage pupils and staff to work more creatively. It has inspired pupils to write their own play or to write about what they learned from the play which can lead to an improvement in literacy skills.
Enhances speaking and listening skills
Encourages active listening skills and improves the clarity and confidence of pupils speech.
Improves concentration
Pupils are encouraged to focus on their goal and taught how much they can achieve in one day.
Enhances Empathetic Skills
Pupils are encouraged to see things from the characters point of view.
Increases individual confidence
The use of positive reinforcement and praise given throughout the day means even the quietest pupil can be encouraged to participate in the performance.
Suitable for pupils whatever their academic ability
All pupils are encouraged to take part. As pupils are given the lines orally, children who struggle academically or with reading respond really well to this creative way of working.
Introduces theatre skills
It gives the pupils a basic introduction to theatre skills and techniques they may not have previously used such as choral speech, stylised movement, and mime, cross cutting and comic timing.
